YET ANOTHER WEEK DOWN…YIKES….

This whole thing seems to be going by very fast.

I had a very uneventful week. We had two projects due on Friday which did not leave much time for anything else. I tend to do a lot at school at home. I take on jobs that I don’t necessarily want to do, I tend to be outspoken, and sometimes I step up and be a leader on some jobs. Before I came to Manchester I had a plan to leave that at home, just cruise by, and travel a lot.

Well my plan does not seem to be coming true and nothing has changed. I am working just as hard over here as I do at home. Sad face… I guess happy face also…

Had a site analysis pin up on Friday followed by a presentation on “contextualism” and the urban form. Both went very well.

An article on contextualism if you want o learn about it

As for site analysis we focused on the contemporary human geography of Cartmel and found out the dramatic changes over the recent past can be sources from one event in 2003 when the town almost stopped building all together. At least that is what I found…who knows if it is true of not…but I think it is.

Pretty excited to have those down…

Other than that life is completely normal here.

Next week we go to Venice, Milan, and Munich…very excited…

It has been another long week.

My Internet is behaving badly in my dorm and I end up loosing work all the time because it makes my computer crash. Anytime I am out and working elsewhere there is no problem. This leads me to believe it is actually the internet at my flat rather than the computer itself.

Very frustrating.

If it gets any worse I am going to loose my mind.

Anyways…

We are well underway with our site analysis for the village of Cartmel. (Link to some information below). It is a very significant village in the area because it is one of the only churches in England that survived the dissolution of the Catholic Church by king henry vIII in 1563.

Interesting stuff

the village of Cartmel is very picturesque.  as you can see in the pictures above. A pretty amazing place all in all but still with a lot of problems.

The village is becoming gentrified. There is a Michelin star restaurant, a fancy horse racing track, and most of the property is owned by a few developers that are turning the town into a rich destination at the expense of the villagers who have lived there for their entire life.

It has been a lot of work but very interesting.  More to come on cartmel

I did a small Manchester explore on Saturday.

Manchester art gallery which has a lot of Thomas Gainsborough, as well as some Renoir, etc… pretty impressive but small. There is a very impressive exhibition on paper cut outs that blew my mind. I couldn’t take photos because there was a tour going on at the same time but it was pretty amazing.

I also went to the Imperial war museum. By Daniel Libeskind. The exterior of the building is ok…I don’t really like it. But the way the interior worked was very cool. At set times in the day all the lights go out, and film and pictures are projected onto every surface, there are narratives and sound effects over the speakers and it lasts for about 15min. very cool.

That is about where I am for this week. I am trying to get a little ahead because things are going to catch up with me real fast.

Also, I won an architecture scholarship worth 500 bucks…

More to come…
